Proof presented by Utah prosecutors on Tuesday shed light on what they believe drove Tyler Robinson to allegedly kill conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Seized Texts Suggest Ideological Motivation
In text messages reproduced in the state, Robinson is described saying to his roommate—referred to as “transitioning genders”—that he had enough of Kirk’s “hatred”.
“Certain kinds of intolerance cannot be negotiated out,” Robinson reportedly stated.
Prosecutors claim that Robinson’s mother informed authorities her son had over the past year become increasingly ideological and had begun leaning to the left, supporting LGBTQ+ rights.
Family Tensions and Ideological Differences
His new outlook reportedly led to disagreements between family members, especially between Robinson and his father, who maintained opposing political views.
Earlier news coverage noted that Robinson’s parents were registered GOP voters who supported Donald Trump in 2024.
Prosecutors cited a text in which Robinson referred to his father as “pretty diehard maga”.
Planning and Execution of the Attack
According to the state, Robinson commented on Kirk’s event at Utah Valley University, calling it a “stupid venue”.
The suspect’s parent informed investigators that Robinson had claimed Kirk of “promoting intolerance”.
Following the incident, Robinson’s parents allegedly recognized their son in a security image broadcast in the news.
The suspect’s dad, a firearms owner, feared the rifle used in the killing was the same as one he had given to his son.
Confession and Arrest
During a talk with his father, Tyler Robinson allegedly confessed to the killing, stating there was “excessive hatred” and that Kirk “spreads too much hate”.
Robinson subsequently turned himself in to police with the assistance of a close acquaintance who was a local law enforcement official.
Evidence and Accusations
Prosecutors cited genetic material recovered on the firearm discarded near the university, as well as texts to his roommate, as critical proof linking Robinson to the crime.
Engravings on bullet casings discovered near the scene included phrases such as “anti-fascist slogans” and “a resistance song lyric”.
But Robinson reportedly dismissed these markings in a message as “fuckin … mostly a big meme”.
Partner’s Question and Response
In one texts, the partner asked Robinson, “You weren’t the one who did it right?”
The suspect—called his partner his “dear”—reportedly replied, “I am, I’m sorry.”
Additionally, he expressed regret for “dragging into” the partner and wrote that he had wanted to hide the secret until he passed away naturally.
Legal Charges and Possible Sentence
Robinson faces aggravated murder, and prosecutors stated they will pursue the maximum punishment if he is convicted.
A key element mentioned was that Robinson targeted Kirk based on his political expression.
Jeff Gray, the top attorney in the county, stated that the decision to seek the death penalty was made without external influence and guided only by the facts and severity of the offense.
