In what was described as “a US disaster,” prosecutors laid out an alarming account of the accused killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
A Premeditated Attack
Per the district attorney’s office, Tyler Robinson had become consumed by animosity for Kirk and his ideology. Authorities allege Robinson orchestrated the murder in just over a week after discovering Kirk would be speaking at Utah Valley University.
Text Messages Reveal Admission
The state say Robinson sent his roommate messages confessing to the crime. In a particular exchange, Robinson allegedly stated, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
“Erase this exchange,” the suspect allegedly wrote in one communication.
Murder Weapon Information
Investigators believe a bolt-action rifle owned by Robinson’s grandparent was used in the killing. The weapon was subsequently found in a nearby field wrapped in a towel.
Three bullets were recovered with the rifle, each engraved with provocative messages.
Ideological Motives
According to testimony from Robinson’s parent, the suspect had over the past year become more political and begun leaning toward progressive views, embracing gay and trans rights.
Robinson had also started dating his housemate, a man who was transitioning, which reportedly led to conflict within his family.
Apprehension and Accusations
The suspect was taken into custody on September 12 and charged with aggravated murder. The district attorney announced they will seek the death penalty.
Authorities indicate Robinson’s own parent identified him from media photos of the shooter and contacted authorities.
Court Hearings
The suspect had an initial court appearance on Tuesday, with a waiver hearing scheduled for September 29.
The state stressed that the information shared are merely allegations at this stage and acknowledged the pain of Kirk’s loved ones.
“Like all murders, the senseless taking of Charlie Kirk’s life has shattered the lives of those he loved,” stated the prosecutor.
