Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.
