PROJECT GOALS

THE OPEN MOBILE ACCESS NETWORK

The key objectives of whyless.com are concerned with the release of the enormous sleeping economic potential of wireless communication. This is reflected in the key attempt to break-up the current paradigmatic infrastructure – service – terminal (user) chain which is slowing down the development of novel network services and applications. Due to its rigidity, the chain type of networks prevent a quick response to changing user needs and business models as they do not encourage the development of high quality services and applications. whyless.com will research scalable radio technology and network resource trading principles which avoid gigantic infrastructure paradigm shifts caused by current network development principles while enabling steady evolutionary growth and ‘swift’ adaptation to future user and business requirements.

INNOVATION

\\ Economy

The whyless.com goal to ‘standardise’ a new commodity dealing with the transportation of electronic information, will have profound impact on the development of one of the most important sectors of today’s and particularly future economy, which is information technology. Physically limited information transportation resources, especially when wireless, in the presence of the tremendous (and still increasing) information production rate, require mechanisms which provide simple access and equal possibilities for all parties wanting to access this resource. In other words, the information transport resource will be integrated into trading schemes exposing it to open market offer and demand. Today’s regulatory intervention in wireless information transport resource allocation would then be largely replaced by open market mechanisms, and automatically lead to its most efficient economic utilisation, driven by the principles of highest added value.

\\ Business

Innovation on a grand scale as regards new business opportunities is expected from  whyless.com principles. The high innovation potential of small and medium enterprises in all areas of work and business will become ‘mobile’ due to the simple access to information transport resources described above.

According to the whyless.com vision, new business scenarios will emerge in the area of small scale contributions to the information transport infrastructure. The idea of quasi-autonomous radio nodes connected via heterogeneous networks will allow small and medium enterprises to participate in the build and operation of the infrastructure.

\\ Technology

The technical novelty of whyless.com is twofold. Firstly, the feasibility of scalable radio access principle (Ultrawide Band Radio) will be studied in order to avoid the current multi-standard scenario and hence provide seamlessness and ubiquity to wireless communication. The fundamental viability of this wireless transmission principle has already been proven (e.g. Time Domain Corporation, USA) such that whyless.com will concentrate on the exploration of possibilities to maximise its multi-user properties, the way it needs to be configured to fulfil the requirements of a tradable commodity and the conditions of coexistence with other radio services. The greatest technical innovation however is the creation of vast ‘new’ spectrum resources at relatively low frequencies by means of spectrum double use. Secondly, Information Transport Resource (ITR) brokerage will be explored. Based on current and emerging packet oriented transport protocols, supplemented by novel features required by the new approach, models will be developed demonstrating the economic and technical flexibility of the whyless.com vision. The innovative nature of the approach is in the translation of tailored economic models into technical requirements and algorithms, which makes information transport capacity a commodity comparable to raw metals or minerals.
